San Marcos sits at the intersection of coastal and inland North County, which means trail access in every direction. From quick after-work hikes to full-day adventures, here are the trails worth knowing.

Double Peak Park

The signature hike of San Marcos. A 1,644-foot summit with 360-degree views from the ocean to the mountains. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mexico and out to the Channel Islands. The main trail from the Double Peak Park trailhead is about 2.5 miles round trip with ~500 feet of elevation gain. Not grueling, but enough to feel like a real hike.

Local Tip

Go at sunrise for the best light and fewer people. The parking lot fills up on weekend mornings by 8am. There is also a back entrance off Foxhall Drive that locals use.

Discovery Lake / Discovery Hills

A 3.2-mile loop around a small urban lake on the east side of San Marcos. Flat, easy, and perfect for a quick walk or jog. The lake itself attracts birds and the occasional fishing enthusiast. Connected to a larger trail network that extends into the surrounding hills.

Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve

Technically just outside San Marcos in the Olivenhain area, but every San Marcos hiker claims this one. Over 11 miles of trails through coastal sage scrub and oak woodland. The Botanical Trail and Way Up Trail are standouts. Wildflowers in spring are spectacular.

Jack's Pond Park

More of a nature walk than a hike, but a gem nonetheless. A small park in San Elijo Hills with a pond, picnic areas, and short trails. Great for kids and dogs.

San Marcos Highland Trails

A network of fire roads and single-track trails in the hills between San Marcos and Escondido. Less trafficked and more rugged than the popular spots. Mountain bikers love this area.

Trail Essentials

San Marcos trails are mostly exposed with minimal shade. Even in "winter" the sun is strong. Here is what you should always have with you.
